One example: My last abort happened during a timed mission, with my target on the roof of a three-storey apartment building on the other side of the map. I simply don't believe the algorithms they use to generate maps are capable of guaranteeing that each mission is winnable in the allotted time-there are just too many variables to contend with, particularly the nasty combination of pods dropping into heavily fortified, high-ground positions while you're on the clock. Grr.Īfter playing a bit more, I think XCOM2 expects you to face unwinnable missions-and part of the challenge is knowing when you need to abort the mission, leave soldiers behind, and EVAC.Īfter all, the procedurally-generated maps will, statistically-speaking, give you the occasional mission that's literally impossible to beat (just like they'll give you super easy missions, too). Oh wait, it's on the roof! Even though the animation makes it look they're on the floor. Finally get there, baffled as to why I can't evac with 1 turn left. There's a mission that I've had five attempts at (again with a timer) where you need to get to an evac point (the blue smoke). They either need to be doubled or removed, they just make the campaign a complete chore.Įdit: Oh something else I want to have a moan about.

It completely destroys the strategy aspect of the game because every mission seems to be the same - rush headlong into unexplored areas because you have 8 turns to get somewhere on the other side of the map and interact with an object that's guarded by two groups.Īt the start of the campaign it takes a good 2 turns at least to deal with a sectoid and 2 troopers. You have to sprint across the map to get anywhere close and then they also pack the levels with 3-4 groups of high-health enemies. The time limits on levels are way, way too short. I literally just came here to have a moan about this.
